Optimal puppy nutrition

Adopting a puppy is a big decision - after all, hopefully your new boyfriend will be with you and your family for a long time. The diet and the experiences of the first months have a lasting impact on the puppy and lay the foundation for its further development. Therefore the optimal puppy nutrition is a very important issue.

Well looked after from day one

In order to develop optimally, puppies only need their mother's milk in their first few weeks of life. Only if the bitch does not produce enough food should it be fed. However, puppies are not allowed to receive normal cow's milk, but need special puppy milk, like our Happy Dog Baby Milk Probiotic with a low lactose content and special, intestinal-stabilizing probiotic cultures.
From around the fourth week of life the puppies want to try out how solid food tastes and for the first time also dare to use the bowl. At the latest from the eighth, but usually already in the sixth and seventh week of life, the bitch stops suckling and the small dogs only eat solid food from then on.
The step from breast milk to solid food is a great achievement for the small dog organism. In order to support him and prevent digestive disorders, only high-quality puppy food should be given from day one. This is also important because young dogs have completely different demands on their food than adult dogs.

The puppy has high energy requirements

If you watch your puppy play, you will quickly find that the curiosity and play instinct of the little bundle of fur seem endless. In fact, puppies are significantly more active than adult animals, which is why "normal" dog food for adult animals is not so suitable for them. Puppies need proportionally more calories, and their need for proteins and minerals is increased. In large dog breeds, the right ratio between calcium and phosphorus also plays an important role: It ensures healthy, but not too rapid bone formation. Nutritional errors can have lifelong consequences, so choosing the right puppy nutrition is crucial.

Dry food for puppies

Dry food or wet food - which form of feeding is better? Many dog ??owners ask themselves this question. In fact, no form of food can be described as fundamentally “better” than the other. It is crucial for your dog that it is a “complete food” declared product. Because only this type of food guarantees that the puppy is actually supplied with all the minerals, nutrients and vitamins it needs.

Dry food also has some practical advantages over wet food. The more intense chewing strengthens the gums. Since it can stay longer in the bowl even in summer without spoiling and is easier to remove, it is more hygienic than wet food. Even with the packaging open, the food has a comparatively long shelf life. And it is much more environmentally friendly because there are no empty cans every day. Since it is more energetic, the owner also needs less of it, which means that dry food is comparatively cheap.
To ensure that the supply of water is always sufficient even when feeding dry food, you should ensure that your dog always has fresh water available. It's best to put several water bowls in different places around the apartment to encourage your puppy to drink.
