Cats are carnivores. Therefore, a high proportion of meat in the feed makes sense. But how is the meat content actually determined and which protein sources are processed?
Due to the special metabolism of cats, their complete food - regardless of whether dry or wet food - should contain a lot of meat. The proportion of meat in the feed is defned as the proportion of animal protein in the total protein. There is no uniform interpretation of the term meat. The way of calculating the meat content in cat food is also not clearly defined.
First of all, however, it can be said that meat does not only contain pure muscle meat, but everything that can be used by slaughter or prey: cartilage, bones, internal organs, gastrointestinal contents, skin and fur. In addition to protein and fat, this complete package provides vital minerals such as calcium, as well as trace elements, vitamins, fiber and carbohydrates. Muscle meat also provides B vitamins, phosphorus and iron.
A comparison: A typical prey animal provides the predator with much less muscle meat than we are aware of. The muscle percentage of a mouse is on average only 20 percent, in a rabbit it is about 30 percent. In order to be able to compare cat food directly and neutrally, the meat content as animal protein in the total protein must be defined by the manufacturer. The total protein contained in a feed, so-called total protein or raw protein, is determined by means of "Weender Analysis". This includes two sources of raw materials: animal and vegetable protein. Depending on the variety, cereals and other carbohydrate sources provide not only fiber and carbohydrates, but also a natural protein content between 8 and 14 percent. Perhaps you have already noticed the terms "vegetable protein extract" or "protein isolate" on food packaging? This is vegetable protein in a highly concentrated form.
A meat content of 75 percent in cat food means that the largest share, three quarters, comes from the slaughtered animal and only a quarter of it contains vegetable protein.
